Barrie, Ontario
Northern Ethanol is working diligently to develop its first production facility in Barrie, Ontario, Canada, which when completed, will produce 108 million gallons (409 million litres) annually of fuel ethanol. The Barrie site is under long-term (forty-five year) lease by the Company. The site is that of a former beer brewery operated by Molson Canada which was decommissioned in 2000.
The Barrie location is ideal for ethanol production due to its close proximity to Toronto's gasoline fueling terminals, and excellent rail, road transportation and water access. Northern also believes that existing equipment and infrastructure will provide capital cost savings and shorter time to market for the new plant. Northern is pleased to have chosen the City of Barrie for this important economic development opportunity.
The lease allows Northern to utilize all existing site infrastructure and demolish or modify existing structures to optimize plant operations.
Northern intends to begin construction on the facility in 2008 with a target opening in 2010.
